helping cats who have been abandoned

I am an artist and illustrator,

and I love cats.

My husband and I have 8 cats and one dog.

They are all rescues.
This shop is my effort to try to bring in funds to help us care for our furry  crew, and to make it easier to welcome any new cat who shows up in need.

I grew up a dog person. Then cats began to come into my life. I have developed a deep love and appreciation for these amazing beings. They are beautiful, sensitive, charming, sweet, intelligent, and can be silly. Every cat is unique in their personality. They are also vulnerable.

My husband, Daniel Heikalo,
* is a first-rate musician, composer and audio-technician, as well as photographer and creator of other visual imagery. He grew up a cat person.

Together, for the last 27 years, Daniel and I have welcomed cats into our home. We always have a dog, too, because dogs have wonderful energy that I value.

All of our cats (and dog) are rescues. Some cats came to us dumped by uncaring people. I always remain alert to any cat sounds outside, and check our driveway and road every evening.

I painted a huge sign that I put up by the road on our property, to alert passersby to the cat-overpopulation crisis: 1 male and 1 female can end up making more than 2 million cats in only 8 years; it is essential to sterilize both male and female cats.
A female cat can start reproducing at only 4 months of age.

What do far too many uncaring people do with all these unwanted cats and kittens? They dump them.

Where we live it is far too cold in Winter for the domestic cat to survive without human help. Abandoned cats are traumatized and frightened, and often die miserably from starvation or freezing to death.

Such betrayal by those who abandon cats is abominable.

Backyard breeding is illegal, but it is not regulated.
Several times, cats that clearly are of some specialized breed, have been dumped here. I surmise these little souls are unsold “product” that the unconscionable breeder didn’t want any more.

*Who is Daniel Heikalo?

“….truly one of a kind across multiple media. The utter originality and unique vision which he brings to his music, his graphic design, his photography, and his writing in French and English has surprised and delighted me ever since we first met 40 years ago, and continues to do so. His work is challenging, because you've never seen or heard anything quite like it, and it opens and realizes new and delicious possibilities. I am proud to call him friend and mentor, and look forward to whatever comes next in his creative enterprise.”
- Hugh Blackmer, anthropologist, science librarian, geographer, ethnomusicologist, photographer, musician and instrument builder.

Some of our cats, along with our dog, love to accompany us on daily excursions in the nearby forest. Their exuberant enjoyment of this activity is very special, and vital to their wellbeing.

The healing benefits of Nature Therapy

Also called "forest bathing," involves immersing oneself in the sights, sounds and smells of nature for improved health in body and mind.

it's important for animal companions to have opportunities to directly touch the earth on a regular basis…
