For the love of cats!
I have been drawing for as long as I could hold a pencil.
When I was about 7,
my parents set me up
to try to sell some of
my pictures by the side
of our road.
Pelham, Massachusetts.
My subject matter leans
toward whimsical, caricatural,
and realistic imagery.
I also create from socio-political,
and some feminist mystical
spirit concepts.
And I enjoy surreal ideas.
As an artist, I have a keen interest
in using my talent for positive impact.
Visual art can be a powerful medium.
I have more than 30 years
of experience as a professional
illustrator, artist and graphic designer.
My work includes children’s book
illustration, several of which have
received honourable recognition.
I have also had work published
in magazines, and books for adults.
I share an interesting life with
my husband Daniel Heikalo,
who is a musician, composer,
a skilled photographer and artist.
We have a crew of cats, one dog,
and a big garden.
We live in rural Quebec.
A large percentage of proceeds
from sales of my work goes toward helping cats that have been abandoned.

About my work as an illustrator…
My parents understood the
value of reading, and provided
my siblings and me with excellent
books while growing up.

The quality of the illustrations in
those books made a strong impact.
Without a doubt they influenced
my illustrative work.
One of the first books I illustrated
is a production I am particularly happy with.
When Heaven Smiled On Our World
- Fitzhenry & Whiteside Publishing
A more recent book I had the pleasure
of working on was written by the
Honourable Mayann Francis.

Mayann’s Train Ride
- Nimbus Publishing
It was shortlisted for the
2016 Atlantic Book Awards
Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award
for Excellence in Illustration.
Creating pictures for both children’s
and adult literature is a challenge I enjoy
and derive great satisfaction from -
taking a writer’s tale and interpreting
it artistically.
The research that is involved in
advance of working on a story
is always fascinating.
An additional pleasure is coming up
with small details to add that are my
contribution to the tale.
As an adult, I continue to be
enchanted by quality illustration.
Books with good stories,
and good art, are vital.
Whether illustrating for children or
for adults, I aspire to create art that
is worthy of a collectable book, like
those I grew up with.
Also, as a person with a physical
difference, I know well the need to
“see someone like me”, in the media,
and in literature. My own experience,
of being marginalized for a physical
aspect of myself that I do not have
control over, of knowing how important
it is to see positive representation of
people who are “different”, combined
with a strong artistic talent, is
something I can “bring to the table”.
